According to Defense News, the United Arab Emirates seeks closer defense ties with the United States and China alike, the prospects of exporting the F-35 fighter to Abu Dhabi anytime soon may be getting slimmer. On April 23, the chief of joint operations for the UAE Armed Forces met with the commander of the Chinese Air Force in Beijing to discuss options for strengthening collaboration between their services. The meeting served as the Gulf nation’s most recent overture to China, signaling a particular interest in warplane cooperation.
Northrop Grumman won a $7 billion deal for B-2 modernization and sustainment. This contract provides for B-2 enhancements, sustainment, logistics elements including sustaining engineering, software maintenance, and support equipment. Also included is programmed depot maintenance of the fleet and other interim contractor support. Work will be performed at Palmdale, California; with performance at other locations, namely Whiteman Air Force Base, Missouri; Tinker AFB, Oklahoma; Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio; Edwards AFB, California; and Hill AFB, Utah, and is expected to be completed by May 3, 2029. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, B-2 Division Contracting, Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, is the contracting activity.

The US Army tested a remote landmine detect and diffuse system featuring a drone and a mortar-equipped land vehicle. The Ground Obstacle Breaching Lane Neutralizer (GOBLIN) concept was designed to neutralize a mine from a standoff range, reducing risk for breaching forces. It comprises a mortar-based launcher system integrated on a vehicle platform, a small unmanned aerial system hosted detection system, and a neutralizing munition.

The US Air Force is buying add-on seekers for its Joint Direct Attack Munition-Extended Range (JDAM-ER) bombs to help the precision-guided munitions take out Russian GPS jammers in Ukraine. A $23,6-million contract was awarded to Cypress, California-based Scientific Applications and Research Associates (SARA) to deliver and integrate the Home-on GPS Jam seeker with the JDAM-ERs sent to Ukraine. Work is expected to be completed by October 1, 2025.

The UK Royal Navy has signed an agreement to procure a fleet of Remus unmanned underwater vehicles from American defense contractor HII. The service will purchase three Remuses in their 100-meter depth (328-foot) variant and five in the 300-meter (984-foot) variant. While both have a maximum speed of 5 knots (9 kilometers/6 miles per hour), the Remus 300 model has a modular design to support users in both expeditionary and long-endurance operations.

The US Department of State has approved a possible sale of Lockheed Martin AN/AAQ-33 Sniper Advanced Targeting Pods (ATPs) for the Royal Malaysian Air Force’s (RMAF’s) Boeing F/A-18D fleet. The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on 7 May that 10 AN/AAQ-33 airborne targeting pods had been approved for sale, following a request from the Malaysian government. The proposed sale package, which includes technical data and publications, personnel training, software and training equipment, and related elements of logistics and programme support, has an estimated value of $80 million.

Australian officials have accused a Chinese military jet of releasing flares in close proximity to an Australian Navy helicopter on a UN mission in international waters. The incident, which occurred on May 4th in the Yellow Sea near South Korea, has been condemned as “unsafe” and “unacceptable” by the Australian government. The Australian MH-60R Seahawk helicopter, deployed from the destroyer HMAS Hobart, was conducting a routine flight as part of Operation Argos, enforcing UN sanctions on North Korea. According to Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles, the helicopter was intercepted by a Chinese J-10 fighter jet.

The US Army has revealed a new variant of the Bradley tracked armored fighting vehicle in Saco, Maine. The M2A4E1 is touted as the vehicle’s “most modern and survivable version.” It is integrated with an Iron Fist active protection system to detect and intercept incoming missiles and rockets using radar and infrared trackers and explosive projectiles. The newest Bradley is also equipped with an improved High-Definition Forward-Looking Infrared Gunner’s Sight and an Environmental Control Unit to prevent heat stress.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Tuesday he has been encouraging countries with Patriot missile systems to donate them to Ukraine, which has appealed for more of the air defense batteries. “There are countries that have Patriots, and so what we’re doing is continuing to engage those countries,” Austin told a House Armed Services Committee hearing.
New Zealand’s first C-130J Super Hercules military transport aircraft has conducted its initial flight test in the US. The demonstration saw the vehicle fly for 246 minutes over Georgia and Alabama. It achieved a range of approximately 990 kilometers and an altitude of 3,200 meters. The demonstration followed the 18-month construction of the platform under American defense contractor Lockheed Martin.
Global Hawk
Northrop Grumman won a $387.5 million definitized contract action for Global Hawk (RQ-4) aircraft sustainment. The contract provides for contractor logistics support services. The locations of performance are Sacheon Air Base, Republic of Korea; Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea; Misawa Air Base, Japan; Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy; and San Diego, California; and is expected to be completed by April 30, 2025. This contract involves Foreign Military Sales to the Republic of Korea, Japan Ministry of Defense, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This contract is a sole source acquisition. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, is the contracting activity.
Raytheon won a $8,8 million deal for the procurement of 11 receiver mainframe assemblies in support of the E2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft. The contract does not include options. All work will be performed in El Segundo, California. Work is expected to be completed by April 2027. Naval Supply Systems Command Weapon Systems Support, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the contracting activity.
Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems won a $102 million deal for capability package development and fielding, system integration and fielding, and in-service sustainment in support of current configurations of the AEGIS combat system. Work will be performed in Moorestown, New Jersey, and is expected to be completed by Dec. 31, 2024. Fiscal 2024 research, development, test and evaluation (Navy) funds in the amount of $24,803,348; fiscal 2020 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $6,183,214; fiscal 2024 operation and maintenance (Navy) funds in the amount of $2,029,852; fiscal 2023 research, development, test and evaluation (Navy) funds in the amount of $999,114; fiscal 2017 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $394,513 and fiscal 2019 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $9,546 will be obligated at time of award, and funds in the amount of $3,028,966 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, DC, is the contracting activity.
